About Chanticleer Wine
George and Caddy Grodahl bought 40 acres in the Mayacamas foothills west of Yountville in 1994, initially selling fruit to neighboring wineries. Encouraged by a friend, they released their first commercial vintage in 2000 under the Chanticleer name, working with winemaker Chris Dearden, formerly of Benessere Vineyards, on Super Tuscan-style blends grown on the rocky Morningside hillside.
The estate produced two annual releases, an estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese, plus a Carneros Pinot Grigio, selling around 1,500 cases a year through the mailing list and Yountville's V Wine Cellar. In 2020 the Grodahls sold the Chanticleer brand and Morningside Vineyard to the owner of Nicholson Ranch Winery, and the Napa Wine Project subsequently archived its profile of the winery.
In 2020 the Chanticleer brand and the Morningside Vineyard property were sold to the owner of Sonoma's Nicholson Ranch Winery, ending its run as an independent Napa Valley producer.
