About Dakota Shy
Dakota Shy was founded by Todd Newman, a North Dakota native who moved to Napa in 2002, and veteran Napa vintner Tom Garrett, whose family has deep valley roots, his great-grandmother's Oakville property was once part of the original To Kalon Vineyard. The pair released their first commercial vintage in 2012, purchased their current six-acre St. Helena property in 2014, and completed their winery in time for the 2017 harvest.
The winery sources fruit from more than 15 vineyards across Napa Valley, from south Napa to Calistoga, including two vineyard-designated bottlings: Atlas (a hillside site north of Howell Mountain) and Moulds Family Vineyard (Oak Knoll District). Cabernet Sauvignon makes up about half of annual production, which runs 5,000-6,000 cases; Wine Spectator named the 2022 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon among its Top 100 wines of the year. Todd Newman departed the company in 2024, and longtime general manager Ryan Clark acquired a small ownership stake.
