About Etude Wines

Etude Wines was founded in 1982 by Tony Soter — one of California's most respected consulting winemakers and viticulturists — on a single philosophical conviction: that winemaking begins in the vineyard long before harvest, and that superior grape growing diminishes the need for winemaker intervention, resulting in wine that is grown rather than made. That conviction has guided every Etude decision for over four decades.

The Carneros tasting room at Cuttings Wharf Road sits at the north end of San Pablo Bay, where the Pacific Ocean's cooling influence funnels through the Petaluma Gap to create one of California's most reliably cool and fog-influenced wine-growing climates. Etude's Carneros estate vineyards produce the benchmark cool-climate Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, and Blanc de Noirs sparkling wine alongside the wider California Pinot Noir sourcing program that spans the Pacific Coast's finest cool-climate sites.

The Terroir Tasting — a guided experience focusing on the clarity and expression of a single grape variety from multiple specific origins — is the most educational and site-specific experience available in the Carneros corridor, demonstrating how different California cool-climate terroirs produce distinctly individual expressions of the same variety in the hands of a winemaker committed to vineyard-first wine production.
