About Haynes Vineyard
The Whitford/Haynes family first planted this Coombsville site in 1967 with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay under the guidance of Louis M. Martini, on land the Whitford family had farmed since 1885; the vines are recognized as among the oldest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir plantings in Napa Valley. Patricia and Duncan Haynes sold fruit to Martini for years before launching their own label in the 1980s, with legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff overseeing production for the family in the 1990s.
Gaylon Lawrence of Lawrence Wine Estates (which also owns Heitz Cellar) purchased the property from Patricia Haynes in 2019. Winemaker Matt Taylor now describes the role as one of stewardship rather than winemaking, and the estate produces small-lot Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah, plus vineyard-tour experiences run jointly with Heitz Cellar.
