About Heitz Cellar
Joe and Alice Heitz founded the winery in 1961, buying 8.5 acres near St. Helena from Leon Brendel. Joe, a UC Davis enology graduate who trained under André Tchelistcheff at Beaulieu Vineyard, began buying Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from Tom and Martha May's Oakville vineyard in 1965, and in 1966 Heitz Cellar became the first Napa Valley winery to bottle a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon -- the wine that became Martha's Vineyard.
The winery remained family-owned for nearly six decades until April 2018, when Nashville businessman Gaylon Lawrence Jr. purchased Heitz Cellar, its 425 acres of vineyards, and its winery and tasting facilities, folding it into what is now Lawrence Wine Estates. Heitz continues to produce single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons from Martha's Vineyard (Oakville), Trailside Vineyard (Rutherford) and Linda Falls Vineyard (Howell Mountain), and now also hosts tours of sister property Haynes Vineyard in Coombsville.
