About Kissed by an Angel Wines
Kissed by an Angel is a family winery on Mount Hermon Road in Scotts Valley, and the name is not a marketing flourish. The wines are dedicated to the memory of the family's daughter Amanda, who is the angel of the label.
Larry Olivo is the third-generation winemaker, working in an old-world Italian style handed down from his grandfather. The house preference is for aged reds, made to drink soft and smooth rather than tight and tannic.
The family farms limited plots of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Zinfandel in the Santa Cruz Mountains and buys the rest of the fruit on contract from vineyards matched to each variety across northern and central California. The result is a range far wider than the vineyard alone would allow, running well past the usual three or four bottlings.
The tasting room is a comfortable, spacious one with a patio, and the winery is explicit that pets are welcome. Live music plays most Fridays and Saturdays, often with a food truck or pop-up kitchen alongside, and no reservation is needed to drop in.
