About Lamborn Family Vineyards

Bob Lamborn, a former CIA- and FBI-cleared private investigator, bought his first acre on Howell Mountain in 1969 and, with his son Michael, expanded to 40 acres in 1971. The family spent years clearing the mountaintop land, planting Zinfandel among century-old vines left by earlier Italian immigrant growers, and released their first commercial vintage in 1982 with the help of Howell Mountain winemaking pioneer Randy Dunn.

Winemaker Heidi Barrett, known for cult labels like Screaming Eagle, joined the family in 1997 and made every Lamborn vintage for decades. The Lamborn family sold the Howell Mountain property in 2021-22 to new owners from Singapore, who now produce wine from the same vineyard under a different label; the sale marked the end of new releases under the Lamborn Family name.

A CIA investigator turned vintner, founder Bob Lamborn held CIA and FBI security clearances as a private investigator before deciding, after a divorce, that his life needed the structure of the wine business.
Rebuilt after the Oakland firestorm, when the devastating 1991 Oakland Hills fire destroyed Bob's home, the family responded by naming that year's Zinfandel "Phoenix," starting a tradition of naming every vintage after its own story.
Made for decades by a cult-wine winemaker,Heidi Barrett, famous for Screaming Eagle, crafted every Lamborn Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon from 1997 until the property changed hands.
