About Macauley Vineyard
Macauley Vineyard was originally established in the early 1980s in St. Helena by Ann Macauley Watson, whose inaugural release was a late-harvest, Sauternes-style Sauvignon Blanc made with winemaker Ric Forman. After Ann's death, her son Mac Watson revived the family label in 2000-2001, partnering with winemaker Kirk Venge, a second-generation winemaker who trained at UC Davis and worked at Mumm Napa and Venge Vineyards, to crush the first grapes under the relaunched label in October 2001.
Macauley sources fruit through long-term vineyard contracts rather than a single estate, including Cabernet Sauvignon (with a To Kalon Vineyard designation), old-vine Zinfandel from Calistoga (planted 1904-1916), Bacigalupi Vineyard Chardonnay from the Russian River Valley, and Fort Ross-Seaview Pinot Noir, fermenting lots separately with indigenous yeast where feasible and bottling unfined and unfiltered. Production is small, typically no more than a few hundred cases per vintage; the winery's prior tasting facility burned in the 2020 Glass Fire, and it now hosts private, appointment-only tastings at a salon on Main Street in downtown St. Helena, opened in 2019.
