About Moon Mountain Estate
Moon Mountain Estate occupies one of the most dramatic and historically significant wine properties in Sonoma County. The 550-acre estate on the western slopes of the Mayacamas mountain range rises from 1,200 to 2,200 feet elevation — terrain so rugged and challenging that much of the land remains as wild forest and chaparral surrounding the 90 planted acres. Some of the vines on the property are over 200 years old, predating California statehood and representing some of the oldest continuously farmed wine vines in North America.
The Moon Mountain District AVA — established in 2013 — covers the steep, volcanic Mayacamas hillside between Sonoma Valley and the Napa Valley ridge, and Moon Mountain Estate is its most prominent and historically significant property. 5th-generation winegrower Clay Mauritson — whose family has farmed Sonoma County since 1868 — oversees the farming of 14 distinct Bordeaux varieties planted across the elevation-diverse estate. Acclaimed winemaker Philippe Melka, whose client list includes some of Napa Valley's most prestigious estates, crafts the wines.
The combination of ancient volcanic soils, extreme elevation, 200-year-old vines, and Melka's precision winemaking produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Bordeaux blends of extraordinary concentration and aging potential from one of California's most genuinely wild and historically resonant wine estates.
