About Murrieta's Well
Murrieta's Well is named for the legendary well — the water source on the historic Livermore Valley ranch where Joaquin Murrieta, the notorious California bandit of Gold Rush legend, is said to have watered his horse during his flight from California law. Joaquin Murrieta (variously called the 'Robin Hood of the West') became one of Gold Rush California's most mythologized figures, and the well that his legend touches gives this Livermore Valley estate a connection to the most romantic chapter of California history.
The Mines Road estate was originally established in 1884 on land that was part of the historic rancho landscape, with the legendary well still on the property. The estate produces Meritage (Bordeaux blends), Sémillon, and Cabernet Sauvignon from Livermore Valley estate vineyard sources. The estate is now owned by Wente Vineyards but maintains its own distinct identity, branding, and winemaking program.
