Orin Swift Cellars

Dave Phinney founded Orin Swift Cellars in 1998 at age 24, naming it for his father's middle name and mother's maiden name, after a temporary harvest job at Robert Mondavi Winery convinced him he'd rather work hard for himself. His flagship red blend, The Prisoner, became so popular that Phinney sold that label alone to Huneeus Vintners in 2010, while continuing to build Orin Swift around wines like Papillon and Mercury Head.

Phinney sold Orin Swift itself to E&J Gallo in 2016, a partnership he says gave him access to prized vineyards including Stagecoach on Atlas Peak, of which Orin Swift was once the largest single buyer. Phinney designs every label himself, drawing on a punk and skateboard aesthetic from his Los Angeles upbringing, and the winery now pours from a restored Art Deco bank building in downtown St. Helena.
