About Paloma Vineyard
Paloma Vineyard was founded in 1983 when Jim and Barbara Richards purchased 17 acres atop Spring Mountain and began clearing and planting Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah; they sold grapes to other Napa wineries for years before releasing their first Paloma Merlot (the 1994 vintage) in 1996, with a dedicated winery facility completed in time for the 2000 harvest. The estate sits at 4013 Spring Mountain Road, St. Helena, within the Spring Mountain District AVA.
Paloma's 2001 Merlot was named Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year in 2003, and later vintages have also landed on the magazine's Top 100 lists. Jim Richards passed away in 2009 and Barbara in 2016; son Sheldon Richards now owns and makes the wine, continuing sustainable, hands-on farming of the property's roughly 7,500 vines, with grandsons Caston and Jace representing a third generation. The vineyard survived the 2020 Glass Fire, though that year's crop was lost to smoke taint.
