PasoPort Wine Company at 1606 Spring Street in Paso Robles is dedicated to the production of Port-style fortified wines from Portuguese grape varieties, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Cão, and Souzão, farmed in the warm, dry Paso Robles appellation that closely mirrors the conditions of Portugal's Douro Valley. Founded in 2012, PasoPort has established itself as the region's most focused and technically accomplished producer of California Port-style wines, filling a niche that most California wineries ignore in favor of the fashionable dry red and white programs.
Paso Robles is arguably better suited to authentic Portuguese-variety Port production than any other California appellation. The heat, low humidity, and calcareous soils closely resemble the Douro's schist-dominated terrain, and the Portuguese varieties that produce the Douro's greatest Ports thrive here with a similar vigor. PasoPort's wines undergo traditional fortification with grape spirit, aging in small oak vessels, and extended oxidative aging that develops the nutty, dried-fruit complexity that defines great Port-style wine.
Walk-ins are welcome daily from 11am to 6pm with a $15 tasting fee.
