Porter-Bass Vineyard

Porter-Bass is a small, family-owned biodynamic winery tucked into a saddle between two redwood-covered ridges just above Guerneville, on the cool western edge of the Russian River Valley about nine miles from the Pacific. The Porter and Bass family bought the then-rundown vineyard, with its century-old Zinfandel vines, in 1980 and set about renewing the soil through organic and biodynamic farming; since 2001 they've reserved a small share of the fruit for their own estate wines.

Today mother-and-son team Susan Porter and winemaker Luke Bass farm the 25-acre estate, planted mostly to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with a treasured old-vine Zinfandel block. The Demeter-certified wines are made naturally, indigenous-yeast fermentation, neutral barrels, unfined and unfiltered, to give balanced, coastal-cool expressions of the site; the fruit is so prized that it also goes into wines from names like Littorai and Ceritas.

A visit is intimate and off the beaten path: a scenic drive up Mays Canyon Road through the redwoods to a barrel-and-plank tasting bar under a walnut tree beside the owners' home. By appointment.
