Quintessa is named for the quinta essentia — the fifth essence, the concept from medieval alchemy and philosophy representing the most refined, purest expression of any substance. Agustin and Valeria Huneeus chose this name to declare their founding philosophy: one wine, one estate, the most refined possible expression of the Rutherford Bench terroir.
The 178-acre certified organic estate on the western Rutherford Bench produces a single wine — Quintessa, a Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Carmenère, Merlot, and Petit Verdot — assembled from the estate's most expressive blocks each vintage. The single-wine philosophy, the certified organic farming, and the Huneeus family's Latin American wine heritage (Agustin Huneeus Sr. built the Franciscan Estates and Veramonte empires) all inform the estate's founding spirit.
Wine Advocate has scored Quintessa at 94–99 points across multiple vintages, placing it consistently among Napa Valley's most critically acclaimed cult estates.
