About Spero Winery
Spero Winery is a family-owned boutique winery in Denver where Clyde Spero makes wine in the old-world Italian tradition he learned from his father, Gaetano. Gaetano came to America from Potenza, Italy, at just 13, with about five dollars in his pocket, and Clyde began making wine for the public in 1999, carrying that legacy forward with his wife, June.
The label, Vino e Buono, was designed by June's cousin and features Gaetano himself raising a glass in salute. The original small urban vineyard no longer provides enough fruit, so Spero sources grapes from the Western Slope around Palisade and Grand Junction, from Pueblo, and from a cousin's vineyard in Lodi, California. The result is a broad, approachable range, award-winning Zinfandel and Sangiovese among them, poured by the family, often three generations at once, at free Saturday tastings.
Hours, tasting fees, and reservation policies change with the season, so it is worth checking the winery's website or calling ahead before you visit, especially on weekends. The details on this profile may have shifted since publication, and the producer is always the most authoritative source.
Old-world Italian winemaking, passed down from a father who arrived with $5 in his pocket.
