About Tercero Wines
Tercero Wines is the passion project of owner-winemaker Larry Schaffer, who came to wine as a second career, earned his master's in viticulture and enology from UC Davis, joined the Fess Parker winemaking team in 2005, and then struck out on his own with a label named for his freshman dorm.
Larry is a Rhone specialist through and through, serving as 2025 president of the Rhone Rangers board, and he sources small lots from leading vineyards across nearly every Santa Barbara County AVA. The style favors neutral oak so the fruit speaks, and the lineup is full of pleasant surprises: a Mourvedre rose, a chillable red called aberration, and curiosities like Gewurztraminer, Cabernet Franc and Counoise.
The tasting room, tucked just off the main drag at 2445 Alamo Pintado Avenue in Los Olivos, is famously personal. Larry is often behind the bar himself, opening with his signature question, how do you take your coffee, and building the tasting around your palate, information over intimidation.
