About The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey

The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey is a celebrated winery in Cañon City, set on the pastoral grounds of Holy Cross Abbey, a Benedictine monastery, against the backdrop of the Wet Mountains. Established in 2001, it grew from the abbey's remaining monks seeking a new source of income, opened to the public in July 2002, and has been drawing visitors from around the world ever since.

Current owner Larry Oddo bought the winery in 2005 and, with winemaker Jeff Stultz, a fourth-generation Coloradoan, and events manager Sally Davidson, grew it into a 9,000 to 10,000 case operation that has collected well over a thousand awards. Stultz hand-crafts every wine on the property, from crush to bottle, sourcing Colorado grapes wherever possible, including from vineyards the winery helped establish at a nearby state prison, whose farm program grows the Riesling behind the top-selling American Riesling. The tasting room occupies a 1911 Arts and Crafts cottage, once part of the abbey's boys' school, and the winery is known for its Wild Cañon Harvest, a fruity community-crush rose made from grapes donated by backyard growers across Fremont County.

Hours, tasting fees, and reservation policies change with the season, so it is worth checking the winery's website or calling ahead before you visit, especially on weekends. The details on this profile may have shifted since publication, and the producer is always the most authoritative source.

A dream of fine Colorado wine, realized on the serene grounds of a mountain abbey.
