About The Storm Cellar

The Storm Cellar is a boutique West Elks AVA estate on Sunshine Mesa, between the towns of Hotchkiss and Paonia, run by husband-and-wife team Jayme Henderson and Steve Steese. Former Denver sommeliers, they left the city in 2017, restored a high-elevation vineyard perched roughly 500 feet above the North Fork Valley floor, and released their first wines in 2019.

At nearly 6,000 feet, the regeneratively farmed, 23-acre vineyard yields crisp, aromatic dry whites, roses, and sparkling wines from 100% Colorado fruit, a focused range that has collected more double-gold medals at the Colorado Governor's Cup than any other winery in recent years, including a record five in 2025. Named 2023 Colorado Winery of the Year and featured everywhere from a Wall Street Journal cover story to, the winery pairs an outdoor tasting room and garden with a busy calendar of chef dinners and pop-ups that showcase the North Fork Valley's farm-to-table scene.

Hours, tasting fees, and reservation policies change with the season, so it is worth checking the winery's website or calling ahead before you visit, especially on weekends. The details on this profile may have shifted since publication, and the producer is always the most authoritative source.
