About Timbre Winery
Timbre Winery is the terroir-driven Central Coast label of Joshua Klapper, a former sommelier who earned a Wine Spectator Grand Award for the wine list at Los Angeles's Sona restaurant in 2004 before trading the dining room for the cellar. He launched the winery in 2005 as La Fenetre Wines in the Santa Maria Valley, learning alongside Central Coast trailblazers Jim Clendenen of Au Bon Climat and Bob Lindquist of Qupe, and renamed it Timbre in 2016.
The name captures the philosophy: timbre is the quality of tone that makes two voices distinct even when singing the same song, just as two winemakers working the same vineyard make different wine. Klapper crafts around 4,500 cases of elegant, minimally oaked, site-expressive wines, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay alongside Rhone varieties, Cabernet, and Riesling, sourced from coveted vineyards across the SLO Coast and Santa Barbara County, including Bien Nacido and Presqu'ile. The music theme carries through to wine names like Lead Vocals, Rare Groove, and Dancing Queen.
Timbre pours in a welcoming downtown tasting room in Arroyo Grande, where guests sip from the team's handcrafted wooden flight boards, with a newer, larger production space and tasting room in San Luis Obispo. Reservations are recommended, especially for larger groups.
