About Wargin Wines
Wargin is a family winery run by Denise Wargin and her husband Mikael, who makes the wine. Mikael was vineyard manager at Burrell School, further up the Soquel-San Jose road, before starting the label.
What sets it apart is the grape list. Wargin leans hard into Cal-Italia, and carries one of the broadest selections of Italian varieties in the Bay Area: alongside the Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir sit Montepulciano, Sangiovese, Barbera, Freisa and Petite Sirah, several of which almost nobody else here bottles. The signature is a red blend of Italian varieties.
The labels are part of the fun and have won their own recognition, taking a label series award at the San Francisco Chronicle competition, and the winery's muse appears on the bottles as the Fairy Wine Mother.
The Soquel Village room is small, set in a former antique store, with a burl wood bar, antiques still about the place and a patio to sit out on. Prices stay notably reasonable for the region.
There is a second Wargin room in Watsonville, on Hangar Way, alongside the working cellar.
