About William Cole Vineyards
John and Hannah Weinberger bought this St. Helena property from Charles and Carolina Krug in 1869 for just $3,000 and built the first stone wine cellar in Napa Valley. After a disgruntled former employee murdered John in 1882, Hannah took over the winery herself and ran it for 38 years, becoming celebrated as Napa Valley's first woman winery owner and winemaker before Prohibition forced its closure in 1920.
The property passed through several owners as a private home, including a 1938 renovation by the Harrison family using architect Bourn Hayne, before William and Jane Ballentine bought the abandoned 1873 stone building in 1999. It took the Ballentines five years and a special county historic ordinance to restore the winery, reopening in 2004 as the first Napa Valley stone winery of its era to resume full operation, named for their son Cole.
