About White Rock Vineyards
White Rock's vineyard history dates to the 1870s, when Dr. Pettingill planted one of Napa Valley's earliest sites, though the vines were pulled out by 1965 and the land converted to a horse training facility. Henri and Claire Vandendriessche bought the abandoned property in 1977, replanted it, and spent nearly a decade selling fruit to other wineries before releasing their own first vintage in 1986, converting the old stone winery building into their family home.
The estate's hand-dug cave, one of only a few in Napa Valley to use a stacked-bottle aging system also found at Far Niente and Schramsberg, has hosted other producers over the years, including Hudson Vineyards before it built its own Carneros winery. The Vandendriessche sons now run White Rock: Michael manages the vineyard and Christopher, who trained under John Kongsgaard at Luna, oversees winemaking, continuing after a 2017 wildfire destroyed the family home but spared most of the vines and cave.
