About Boyd Family Vineyards
Stan and Joan Boyd, he from Fairmont Hotels, she from marketing at Qantas, ended a five-year property search in 1998 with a rundown plum orchard on Big Ranch Road in Napa's Oak Knoll District. They replanted it as Big Ranch Vineyard, which stretches east to the Napa River, and made their first vintage in 2000, initially at Robert Biale before winning approval in 2018 to build a winery on site.
The estate grows Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Viognier, selling roughly half its grapes to neighboring producers and keeping the rest for about 3,000 cases a year of estate wine, from Sauvignon Blanc and rosé to a long-aged Cabernet Franc. Everything sells exclusively direct from the winery, backed by two wine clubs, library vintages, and large-format bottles up to six liters.
From a replanted plum orchard beside the Napa River, the Boyds sell every bottle directly to the person who drinks it.
