About Brown Estate Vineyards
Brown Estate was founded in 1980 when Dr. Bassett Brown and Dr. Marcela Brown purchased remote ranch land in the Chiles Valley District's eastern hills, originally intending it as a family retreat. Their children later recognized the quality of the estate's fruit and launched the Brown Estate label in 1996, debuting publicly at the 2000 ZAP Zinfandel Grand Tasting in San Francisco; it is recognized as Napa Valley's first Black-owned estate winery.
The family farms 50 planted acres on an approximately 450-acre property, certified organic through California Certified Organic Farmers. Winemaker David Brown, one of the founders' children, has made every vintage since the label's 1996 debut, bottling single vineyard blocks separately to express the estate's varied microclimates, with Zinfandel as the historic flagship variety.
