About Lester Estate Wines
Lester Estate sits on a secluded 210-acre ranch on Pleasant Valley Road, and the family name will already be familiar to anyone who reads Santa Cruz Mountains back labels. Lester Family Vineyards has long grown premium fruit that other wineries in the region compete for; Soquel Vineyards, a few miles away, has built award-winning Pinot on it.
Dan and Patty Lester wanted to make wine from their own ground rather than only sell the grapes, and the estate now bottles under its own name.
The approach is collaborative and unusual. Rather than employ one winemaker, Lester gives several accomplished vintners access to the same world-class vineyard, so the range shows a single site interpreted a number of different ways across Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah.
Visits are seated and unhurried but time-boxed: flights are twenty dollars and tasting room reservations run to ninety minutes. Anyone wanting to make an afternoon of it books a table on the Vineyard View Lawn instead, which the winery arranges against a wine purchase deposit. Light snacks are allowed on the tasting room patios, and the house rule is pack it in, pack it out.
