About Lewelling Vineyards

The Lewelling family's Napa Valley roots trace to 1864, when horticulturist John Lewelling, later declared the "Father of California Horticulture," planted vines and orchards in western St. Helena and helped found the St. Helena Viticultural Club alongside Charles Krug. When phylloxera destroyed his vineyards in the 1870s, the family converted the land to walnuts and fruit trees, running a dehydrator on the property into the 1960s.

It wasn't until the 1970s that John's descendants Doug and Dave Wight replanted the ranch to Cabernet Sauvignon, with Dave, a UC Davis viticulture graduate who had worked at Inglenook, founding the modern Lewelling label with its first commercial release in 1992. Today, seventh-generation family member Haley Wight helps steward the roughly 200-acre ranch, which still includes grazing cattle and 85 acres of vines.

The Father of California Horticulture, founder John Lewelling earned that title from the California Horticultural Society for his 19th-century contributions to West Coast fruit growing, before wine ever entered the family's story.
A century detour through walnuts, phylloxera wiped out the original vineyards in the 1870s, and the family spent the next century farming walnuts and fruit before replanting to Cabernet in the 1970s.
Seven generations on the same land, the Wight family, descendants of John Lewelling, still ranches cattle and farms the property today, more than 160 years after it was first settled.
