About MacLaren Wine
MacLaren Wine is the husband-and-wife project of Steve and Heather Law, and it is essentially a shrine to cool-climate Syrah. Steve, a Scotsman, MacLaren is his clan name, spent 23 years as an electronics engineer and fell for wine during a decade living in France, where weekends in the northern Rhone turned him into a Syrah devotee. After apprenticing with Dry Creek Zinfandel maker Michael Talty, he released his first MacLaren Syrah in 2007, and he has since become one of California's most respected Syrah producers.
The wines are restrained, lower in alcohol and food-friendly, drawn from fog-influenced single vineyards in the Russian River and Bennett valleys, alongside white Rhone varieties Viognier and Roussanne plus a little Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.
A visit to the MacLaren Cottage is special because Steve himself is usually your host, walking you from the coolest to the warmest sites so you can taste the difference. It's welcoming, unpretentious and genuinely educational, by appointment, and available virtually too.
