About Merryvale Vineyards
Merryvale Vineyards traces its building to 1933, when it opened as Sunnyhill Winery; it became Sunny St. Helena in 1937 when Cesare Mondavi joined as a partner, making the property an early training ground for his sons Robert and Peter Mondavi. The modern winery began in 1983, when Bill Harlan and partners Peter Stocker and John Montgomery acquired the site; after a 1986 to 1988 restoration it reopened and was renamed Merryvale Vineyards in 1991, a name built from letters in the founders' surnames.
Located at 1000 Main Street in St. Helena, Merryvale has been owned by the Swiss-born Schlatter family, René and Laurence Schlatter, since 1996. The winery draws fruit from hillside sites including its Profile Vineyard in St. Helena and the Altezia Vineyard on Mt. Veeder at roughly 2,625 feet elevation, among the highest Cabernet Sauvignon plantings in Napa Valley; the Schlatters favor extended aging before release, holding wines longer than typical to let tannins soften before market.
