About Mount Veeder Winery
Mount Veeder Winery was founded in 1973 by Michael and Arlene Bernstein, who had begun buying land on Mount Veeder in 1963 and planted their first vines in 1965; their debut vintage was 375 cases of estate Cabernet Sauvignon. Ownership passed to Henry and Lisille Matheson in 1983, then to Quintessa co-founder Agustin Huneeus in 1989, before Constellation Brands acquired the winery in 1999, which still owns it today. The estate is at 1999 Mount Veeder Road, with vineyards spanning roughly 1,000 to 1,400 feet in elevation.
The Bernsteins were pioneers of the modern Mount Veeder style: starting with the 1978 vintage, they were reportedly the first in California to blend Cabernet Sauvignon with all four other classic Bordeaux varieties, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. The roughly 90-acre property (about 23 acres planted as of 1989) is dry-farmed and organically farmed, growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Zinfandel, Chenin Blanc, and Chardonnay. Since 2023, public tastings have been consolidated at Arch & Tower, Constellation's shared hospitality space for Robert Mondavi Winery's To Kalon Collective in downtown Napa, rather than on the mountain itself.
