About Catoctin Mountain Wine
The Catoctin AVA covers the scenic corridor along Catoctin Mountain in Frederick and Washington Counties, western Maryland. The region's rocky Appalachian soils, with their mix of limestone, schist, and shale, provide excellent drainage and mineral complexity for Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, and red Bordeaux blends. Black Ankle Vineyards has been the region's breakout star, producing wines that have earned serious attention from national wine media and challenged assumptions about what Maryland can produce. The Catoctin Mountain corridor benefits from its proximity to both Baltimore (one hour) and Washington DC (90 minutes), creating a visitor base that supports a growing number of quality-focused producers. Elk Run Vineyards, Linganore Winecellars, and Catoctin Breeze Vineyard are among the region's other notable estates.
