About Ser Winery

Ser is Nicole Walsh's own label, made in Santa Cruz. The name means to be in Spanish, and the point of it is that each wine should show what its grape and its vineyard actually are rather than a house signature laid over the top.

Walsh came to wine sideways. Born in Michigan, she studied horticulture at Michigan State when the viticulture and enology department had two undergraduates in it, which meant an education delivered largely by graduate professors. A final semester at a sustainable agriculture university in Costa Rica left her fluent in Spanish and committed to sustainable farming.

She then spent two decades at Bonny Doon Vineyard working with Randall Grahm, holding almost every job in wine production along the way, from associate winemaker to vineyard manager to grower relations, with a year in Marlborough, New Zealand in the middle. That New Zealand Pinot Noir experience is what prompted her to start Ser in 2012. She took the WSET diploma in 2013.

The wines are varietal and vineyard-designate, made naturally, from cool-climate Central Coast sites: the Santa Cruz Mountains, Cienega Valley, Santa Lucia Highlands and more recently Edna Valley.

Two decades at Bonny Doon, a year in Marlborough, and a label whose name means to be.

Started from a New Zealand yearThe label exists because of what she tasted in Marlborough in 2008.
"One of the region's most experienced winemakers, working under her own name at last."
