About Barlow Vineyards
The Smith family found their Calistoga property almost by accident in 1994, when a lunch stop at Cafe Sarafornia led to a same-day tour of a 50-acre parcel along the Silverado Trail. Warren Barlow Smith, his wife Jeanne, their son Barr, and Barr's wife Ann planted what is now 36 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Zinfandel.
Barlow remains a grower at heart: roughly 85 percent of the fruit is sold to other Napa Valley wineries, with the rest going into about 1,500 cases a year of estate wine made by winemaker Corey Beck. The first commercial release, in 1997, was just 25 cases. Three generations on, the family farms organically and sells mainly through its wine club and limited distribution.
What began as 25 cases for friends in 1997 is now a 36-acre Calistoga estate that still sells most of its grapes to the neighbors.
