About HillCrest Winery & Distillery
HillCrest Winery holds the distinction of being the oldest existing vinifera vineyard in Oregon, planted in 1961 by Richard Sommer, a University of California Davis graduate who defied conventional wisdom by bringing European grape varieties to the Umpqua Valley. Sommer's pioneering work predated the Willamette Valley wine boom by more than a decade and laid the foundation for what would become Oregon's thriving wine industry. Today the estate continues to produce wines from some of the oldest vines in the state.
In addition to its historic wine program, HillCrest operates a craft distillery producing brandy, grappa, and spirits from estate fruit. The tasting room on Vineyard Lane outside Roseburg offers a chance to taste wines and spirits from one of Oregon's most historically significant properties, surrounded by the rolling hills of the Umpqua Valley. HillCrest is a pilgrimage-worthy stop for anyone interested in the origins of Oregon wine.
