About Monticello Vineyards
Monticello Vineyards takes its name from Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate, a nod to the founding father's legendary passion for wine and viticulture, and to the winery's own ambition to produce wines worthy of a serious table. Located at 4242 Big Ranch Road in Napa's Oak Knoll District, the estate was established in 1970 and has spent over five decades farming some of the cooler, more southerly reaches of the Napa Valley appellation.
The Oak Knoll District benefits from strong afternoon winds off San Pablo Bay that moderate temperatures and extend the growing season, conditions particularly well-suited to Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, both of which develop natural acidity and finesse that warmer northern Napa appellations sometimes lack. Monticello's estate vineyards reflect this: wines with genuine structure, mid-palate complexity, and the ability to age gracefully over a decade or more.
Tastings are by appointment at $35, one of the more accessible price points among Napa estate wineries with this level of history and vineyard pedigree. The Big Ranch Road property offers a quieter, less trafficked Napa experience than the Highway 29 corridor, with the kind of unhurried hospitality that the winery has cultivated over five decades.
"Monticello is one of Napa's quiet achievers, an estate with serious vineyards and serious history that doesn't need to shout to be heard by those paying attention."
With over 50 years of Oak Knoll District farming behind it, Monticello Vineyards has accumulated the kind of vineyard knowledge and institutional memory that newer Napa estates simply cannot replicate. The wines reflect this experience, consistent, well-priced, and rooted in a specific sense of place within the Napa Valley appellation.

Monticello Vineyards takesMonticello Vineyards takes its name from Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate, Monticello, the Renaissance-inspired hilltop house whose Italian name means 'little mountain.' Jefferson's passion for wine is well documented; he was America's first great wine connoisseur, spending years in France tasting Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Champagne.
