Monticello Vineyards takes its name from Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate — Monticello, the Renaissance-inspired hilltop house whose Italian name means 'little mountain.' Jefferson's passion for wine is well documented; he was America's first great wine connoisseur, spending years in France tasting Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Champagne. Jay Corley's Napa Valley estate honors Jefferson's wine legacy through the naming.
The Big Ranch Road estate has been producing wine since 1970, one of Napa Valley's most historically founding modern estates. The Jefferson Cuvée Cabernet Sauvignon is the estate's most explicitly Jeffersonian label. Wine Spectator has scored Monticello's Jefferson Cuvée at 88–92 points.
