About Porter Family Vineyards
Porter Family Vineyards is a small, family-owned winery in the Coombsville AVA east of the town of Napa, owned and operated by Tom and Beverly Porter along with their daughter Heather, who serves as director of winemaking. The estate produced its first vintage in 2005, released in 2008, after Tom Porter - a 27-year IBM veteran who worked on early digital modem technology and BART's automated ticketing system - moved into winegrowing.
The hillside vineyard sits on shallow volcanic-ash soils and benefits from the cooling marine influence of San Pablo Bay that defines Coombsville, allowing extended hang time into October and November. Cave construction on the property uncovered fossilized shorebird tracks estimated at more than five million years old, later featured on the Discovery Channel's Dirty Jobs. The winery produces roughly 2,000 cases a year, including a hand-numbered small-lot Cabernet Sauvignon and wines under its Sandpiper and Amani labels, the latter supporting a children's home in Tanzania.
