About Ten Bears Winery
Ten Bears Winery sits on a scenic parcel near Laporte, about nine miles north of downtown Fort Collins. William Conkling spent sixteen years working at a Fort Collins brewery without giving up his dream of winemaking, and in 2006 he quit to plant a 12-acre vineyard and build the winery.
The bears run deep in Conkling's story, from a lifelong Cubs allegiance to the University of Northern Colorado Bears and the road named Ten Bears that leads to the property, so the winery bears the name too. Wines are hand-selected, French-oak aged, and finished with an exclusive Winter Hibernation process for a smooth, easy-drinking style that is never overly tannic, spanning an Altitude Sparkling, the American Symphony white blend, Grand Valley Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Viognier, and Roaming Bear raspberry, huckleberry, and pomegranate wines. The country-comfortable tasting room and patio look out on the mountains and vineyard, and a second, smaller tasting room sits in downtown Fort Collins.
Hours, tasting fees, and reservation policies change with the season, so it is worth checking the winery's website or calling ahead before you visit, especially on weekends. The details on this profile may have shifted since publication, and the producer is always the most authoritative source.
Beware of the Ten Bears: smooth, easy-drinking wines, never overly tannic.
