About Chateau Montelena

Chateau Montelena occupies one of Napa Valley's most recognizable historic properties at the northern end of Calistoga. The stone château, hillside setting and Chinese garden around Jade Lake create a destination that feels visually distinct from the valley-floor estates farther south. The winery is also closely connected to the 1976 Judgment of Paris through its Chardonnay, giving visitors a direct link to a pivotal moment in California wine history.

Current tastings can introduce Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and other estate or Napa Valley wines. The Taste of Montelena provides a guided overview, while more detailed reservations explore vineyard history, aging and selected library wines. The Judgment of Paris story is important, but the strongest visit goes beyond one famous vintage and shows how the modern estate continues to develop its wines.

The winery is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Reservations provide the most predictable access, although walk-ins may be accommodated. All visitors must be 21 or older to enter the château or participate in an experience. Guests interested in an extensive tour or library tasting should reserve the correct format rather than assuming the standard tasting includes every historic and production space.

The property rewards time before or after the tasting. Jade Lake, mature landscaping and the château make it easy to understand why Montelena is a major Calistoga landmark. The estate does not permit ordinary pets, and guests should dress for weather if walking outdoor portions. Travel time from downtown Napa can be substantial, particularly during busy periods.

Chateau Montelena is ideal for first-time Napa visitors, history enthusiasts and travelers exploring Calistoga. It works well as the anchor of a northern-valley day rather than a rushed stop between appointments in Oakville. Review the published closure calendar, reserve early on weekends and confirm which areas are included. The winery's separate San Francisco tasting room should remain a distinct location rather than being mixed into the Calistoga page.

The Chardonnay that shocked France,Mike Grgich's 1973 Chardonnay topped a blind tasting of top French white Burgundies in 1976, a result now commemorated with a bottle in the Smithsonian's permanent collection.
An 1882 stone chateau, built by rope magnate Alfred Tubbs, the historic building gives the winery its name and its distinctive Calistoga landmark status.
One family, every vintage since 1972,CEO Bo Barrett has been involved with every Chateau Montelena vintage since his family took over the winery, from pruning and weeding as a teenager to running it today.
"Wino Notion likes that Chateau Montelena combines a globally important wine story with a property that is memorable on its own. The château, Jade Lake and Judgment of Paris history give visitors several ways to connect with the estate."
