About Mayacamas Vineyards
Mayacamas Vineyards traces to 1889, when German immigrant John Henry Fisher built the original winery on Mount Veeder. After Prohibition-era ownership by the Brandlin family, Jack and Mary Taylor purchased the property in 1941 and established Mayacamas Vineyards, naming it for a Wappo word describing the "howl of mountain lions." Investment banker Bob Travers bought the estate in 1968, and the Schottenstein family took majority ownership in 2017.
The 475-acre property sits at 1155 Lokoya Road within the rim of an extinct volcanic crater, with roughly 49 acres of dry-farmed, organically grown vineyard spread across elevations of 1,800 to 2,400 feet, among the highest in Napa Valley. Winemaking favors patience over new oak: wines typically age 5-6 years in neutral concrete tanks and decades-old wooden foudres before release, and the estate's 1971 Cabernet Sauvignon was poured at the historic 1976 Judgment of Paris tasting.
A 1971 Mayacamas Cabernet Sauvignon was poured at the 1976 Judgment of Paris, and wines still age 5-6 years before release.
