About Ziata Wines
Karen Cakebread founded Ziata Wines after a career that took her from Hewlett-Packard to Cakebread Cellars, where an opportunity to move to Asia as an international marketing consultant helped launch its early export efforts. Faced with a choice she describes as "Silicon Valley or Napa Valley," she chose Napa, working at Cakebread Cellars from 1989 through 2006 as events director overseeing its educational, culinary, and hospitality programs.
Ziata began with just Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir before expanding into Chardonnay and a Cabernet Sauvignon-based red blend called Mia Madre, Italian for "my mother." Karen still grows her own Sauvignon Blanc on a small Calistoga property she calls KC Ranch, a mix of Wente clone and Sauvignon Musqué planted across her literal front and back yard, while sourcing red grapes from acclaimed sites including Beckstoffer Georges III and Farella Vineyard.
