1851 Vineyards

1851 Vineyards takes its name from the year Carl Hilmar Guenther began building his Pioneer Flour Mills on this land, before floods pushed him to relocate downstream to San Antonio. The mill is long gone, but the historic Hill Country farm remains a Texas Historical Landmark, its original barn, main house, guest house, and smokehouse still standing beneath majestic oaks with distinctive German architecture, just 4.2 miles from Fredericksburg's Main Street, making it the closest estate winery to town.

The property has been in the same family since Van and Peggye Brown acquired it in 1964 and farmed it for decades; Peggye's early interest in winemaking planted a seed that their daughter, Dabs Brown Hollimon, would later grow. In 2013 Dabs and her husband John began transforming the family land into an estate vineyard, planting their first vines that April and opening the tasting room with their first release in November 2016.

Today the roughly ten sustainably farmed acres grow a Hill Country and Rhone-leaning mix, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tannat, Malbec, Petite Sirah, Tempranillo, Albarino, and Chardonnay, rounded out with select Texas High Plains fruit. Visits are relaxed and personal: customized tastings in the shade of ancestral buildings and rolling vines. Hours can shift seasonally, so it's worth confirming before you make the drive.
